If you were the teacher what would you change?

Filed Under (assessment, Year 5) by on 22-11-2011

Thank you to all the parents who took the time to respond to our survey and write us messages regarding Year 5. If you have not yet completed your ‘homework’ the survey will remain open for a while yet.

This post is for the girls to answer. Mrs Thomas and I would like to know how you have found Year 5. Especially what you would change.

SO, if you were the teacher what would you change?
What would you add and what would you take away?
What did you enjoy and what did you dislike?
What should you have had more of and what less of?

Try to remember right back to last January when you arrived for the new year several centimetres smaller and  in shiny shoes. Let us know so that next year can be even better for the current Year 4 students

If I was the teacher I would turn most of my
class in to a blogging room. Also I would make
the children blog and get more people on the blog. Do you like to go on over peoples blogs?
    Which countries do you choose?

  2.   Harrison Says:

I would change the lessons ,the lenth of breaktime and make when you go home erlier

I would change the amount of homework children get!

    If I were a year 5 teacher what would I change?…..

    1. Art

In art I would change art lessons to a lesson where we have a particular kind of art were doing and then show them how to do it then let them paint what ever they want as long as they are doing the particular kind of art. Then the kids wont judge the artworks by how they compare to the others. They will look at them in all in the same way because they are all different.

In art in the first term do locker art where we follow a particular format and style bring in a photograph of ourselves and decorate the paper.

    Do more sculpting

    2. General working

Do more working outside, and have more outside activities. And have flat plastic boards for each student so we have a hard surface to work on, and maybe even a white-board for teachers to use outside for lessons.

Have students on a table of people who work at the same pace and same level of intelligence so they can all do the same work and it is easy to teach the kids who need help sometimes at the same time.

  5.   Alyssa Says:

Hey hey hey it’s me Alyssa again
So if I was the teacher I would probably make everyone in my class excited about learning and try to get them to enjoy.

    Maths change
If I were to change anything I would probably make all the maths learning into projects for the students but before that I would teach them about a few subjects and them make them do there project and see how they understand it and if they don’t I would teacher them a lot more about it.

    English change
In English I would give them set tasks to do like for example give them a book to work on for homework or to read and make them give me a story to see hoe they use question marks or commas or all those other things. Or I would get an English teacher from the high school to come and teach them.

    HSIE change
For HSIE I would give them group assignments and then present them to the class but make some pressure for them to by in some tasks I would give them a certain amount of time and make a challenge and see if they can prepare a quick speech about what they know so far.

    Science change
In science I would probably change form researching to making experiments like explosive chemical reactions or something like that but I recon that would be fun. Umm I would also probably change group experiments to partners because I think that way it is easier to hear what they say and there isn’t much arguing between the group but I would still have some group experiments.

    Art change
In art I would probably give them art assignments in class and get them to start at school but finish off at home and I would also probably change, instead of doing portraits of themselves I would give them someone out off there family to paint and then we will see the comparison. And yeah.

But that is all because I don’t think I would change anything else at school but that’s just my opinion on these changes but I think ICT and PDH and all those other things I would keep them the exact same but that’s just me.

    Bye for now

Hi Mrs Miller and Mrs Thomas

If i was a year 5 teacher i would add that there should be
    + More blogging.
    + Longer reading time.
+ Talk Time (Where the teacher talks to her students and asks all about how life is going and all that sort of stuff and they can talk about worries)
I can not take any thing about year 5 away because it is so fun i am going to miss year 5 next year.

    Jess P :)

  7.   Felicity Says:

    Hi

If I were the teacher for the day …….
    What would I change?
I f there was something I could change in Yr 5 (there is not much because the teachers are great!) But I would maybe use drama in the subjects more. So we could act things out. I also agree with Sarah because the trip to get there in so long. Maybe they could also have a night at the blue mountains or the caves. I would also like to take my netbook home with me. Because then I could use it for thing I need to finish from school.

    What would I take away?

I would take away some of the homework because it takes up time for family friends and extra activities.

    What would I add?

I would add more recess and lunch. I would also add more writing rather than computers because writing is fun as Lauren said. Also I would have more handwriting. More French and Music, also I would move the tables around more. Because I find it really hard to work with some people.

What would I have less of?

As I said I would have less computers and more writing. I would also have less spelling because sometimes I find it hard to finish them

    That is it for now
    Lots of love
    Flickxx

    P.S. I have a few plans for when I am a teacher
P.P.S. Thankyou for a fantastic year, It has been my favourite!!!

  8.   Cynthia.K Says:

To Mrs Miller and Mrs Thomas,
If I was a Year5 teacher I would change nothing. And if I had to add something then I would add more homeowork so the can get them selves thinking. And if I had to take something away I would have to take away a bit of science.
    What will you change?
    Cynthia

  9.   Kira T. Says:

Hi Mrs Thomas and Mrs Miller,
I have had a great year! If I was in charge of what was going on I wouldn’t allowed Mrs Thomas get Appendicitis. That was the disappointment of my year!
Year 5 has been the best,

  10.   Alex Forbes Says:

    Dear Mrs Thomas,

I would love to have done some cooking lessons, I know the senior girls do cook and I think it would have been great to introduce some cooking sessions for the junior girls. Also some more science experiments would be fantastic because I really enjoyed that part of Science.
With the novel study I was wondering if it might be possible to have more choice in the books we read and to choose our own book to study. I loved the book “Once”, I think that is a book everyone should read so definately keep that – it is very important for everyone to learn about the horror of war, I will never forget that book. There were many good times in year 5 and it is hard to think of the”best” or “worst” thing. I am sure the camp and trip to Bathurst would have been one of the best things in year 5 so for me I guess the worst thing about year 5 was missing those trips. Maybe next year!…Thankyou Mrs Thomas for a great year, you are a wonderful teacher From Alex :)

  11.   dawso Says:

    Hi Mrs Miller/Thomas!
Well… what a big responsibility… being the teacher! As Angie has said, I would like to give the teachers a MASSIVE thank-you as this year has been fantastic! I have enjoyed blogging soooooooo much, and I have loved everything we have learnt. I have also enjoyed all of the new girls and the fantastic teachers! Thank you so much for making this year so enjoyable!

So, if you were the teacher what would you change?

I would change how long we are in year 5 for! I would make it last HEAPS longer! I would have more HSIE and Novel Study time! I agree with Colette.. We should be able to take our laptops home! I would also do more drama!!! I would like to change desks more frequently to learn more!

What would you add and what would you take away?

Well, as I said, I would add more drama. I would also add more morning and afternoon help classes where you could come along if you were struggling! I would take away the Global connections unit as Liana has said, because I didn’t learn very much!

What did I enjoy and what did I dislike:

Well I loved HSIE and Novel Study with the choose your own activities! I found that that was a great way to be independent and use our time well! I didn’t really like the Bush Ballads!

We should have more drama and Novel Study! Other than that there has been a great balance of different things to learn about!

    THANKS!

    Dawso

  12.   Cat Says:

    Hi Mrs Thomas/ Mrs Miller
If I were a teacher I would decorate the class room a different thing each month. For example one month it would be at the beach with sand. Or one month it would be a water park.
Secondly I would have NO maths and make sure the year 12 students get into university without doing maths somehow.
You see there are lots of different things that I would do but all in all I could NOT be a teacher. This is because I do NOT like homework and teachers get some. It is VERY hard work to teach us all and help us understand well. And also all you teachers have to put up with us girls. Instead of screaming at us and having a cup of tea your would just lunch off everyone and there problem solved.

  13.   Sonvi Says:

Hi Mrs Miller and Mrs Thomas.
Here are the answers to the questions you asked:

SO, if you were the teacher what would you change?
If I was the teacher I would change the fact that we are not allowed to have a secret santa at the end of the year. But, the people shouldn’t get upset if what they got is not what they wanted. Another thing That I as the teacher would like to change is wearing our PE uniform to school. If there is a day we have to do sport, we should be allowed to wear our PE uniforms to school instead of having to change at school but if it is for swimming, then maybe we could wear our swimmers underneith our PE uniforms.

What would you add and what would you take away?
Something that I would add is air conditioning! We all get so hot in summer because we don’t have air conditioning in the classroom. Something I would take away is having de-oderant in the classroom. But one more thing that I would add is blinds to the door for when we are changing. It is embaressing for us having other classes look at us when we are changing.

What did you enjoy and what did you dislike?
I enjoyed having all the fun activities that we get to do and get time to do some blogging. I don’t like having NAPLAN and the ICAS tests which I don’t know why are so nessesary.

What should you have had more of and what less of?
We should have more time in computer and french lessons and maybe less time of maths and spelling.

There isn’t much I want to change if I was the teacher. It has been the best year ever!

  14.   Lily Says:

    Hi Mrs Miller and Thomas,

If you were the teacher what would you change?
    Hmmmmmm………
If I was the year5 teacher I would change that every friday was mufti day and every 2 weeks the girls would have a choice of a test or donating to a charity every 2 weeks.I would also change that instead of laptops we have ipads so we can take the home and get them in year 5 and have them for your whole life but use them at school from grades 5-12.I would also change that every year 5 girl has a buddy that is in the years of 2-4 as the year sixes have the Kindys and year ones.

What would you add and what would you take away?
I would take away nothing at all!

What did you enjoy and what did you dislike?
I enjoyed having the doors open and spending time with friends and I disliked going home everyday.

What should you have had more of and what less of?
We should have more mufti days and more sport and less of written maths and more of interacting mathematics!

Thats What I would do if I was the year 5 teacher of 2011!
    From Lily :) :-)

  15.   Madi Says:

    Hi everyone,
What would i change? i would change recess to a longer time. Because we hardly get time to eat and play. I mean we do the same amount of work after recess and before recess so why don;t we have recess the same time and lunch? The thing i would add is more art. I love art and i have done the best art in year 5 and i love that Mrs Thomas gives us a subject to draw. And that subject might be a thing we are learning just like the time we had to draw people from the gold rush days. The thing i would take away? Well i have nothing to take away because i loved everything we did in year 5 and i will never forget it:)

  16.   Chloe Says:

Hi Mrs Thomas Mrs Miller and students,

SO, if you were the teacher what would you change?

I would change the way we are taught maths.

What would you add and what would you take away?

I would add some creating classes were we learn to sow, knit etc…

What did you enjoy and what did you dislike?

I enjoy mostly every thing and I don’t dislike anything.

What should you have had more of and what less of?

I think we should have more reading, computer and free time.

    :P By Chloe

  17.   Colette H Says:

Dear Mrs Miller and Mrs Thomas,

These are my answers to the questions that you have asked…

So, if you were the teacher what would you change?
I if I was the teacher I would change one thing, it would be that you are allowed to take our laptops home (if you need the) work on them because it would make things so much easier if we needed to get to the H-drive and if people do have problems with there computer at home they could use their laptops.

What would you add and what would you take away?
This year in year 5 I think was good, but I would give us more choices in sport I wouldn’t add anything else but that is a very small thing doesn’t really needed to happen. In year 5 I wouldn’t take anything away because it just the right amount of everything.

What did you enjoy and what did you dislike?
I enjoy having Novel Study and HSIE because we could choose what we could do each task. I disliked having Naplan and all the other tests but we can’t change anything to do with tests.

What should you have had more of and what less of?
I think that in our week we should have more ICT because we don’t have much time on Friday and we could have done our Gold rush game quicker and move on to other stuff.

  18.   Natalie L Says:

    Reflection Time:
I would change the desk seating arrangements more often because I would like to sit with new people instead of sitting with some people for that whole term. I would also change the lockers more often as well so everybody has a turn of a top locker and a bottom locker.

I would add cooking lessons because junior school students don’t get to do cooking and it is important to learn more about healthy food, unhealthy food and how to prepare and cook food. I would also add design & technology because it is fun to design and sew your own clothes. I would add TV review lessons where we get to watch something on TV and we have to write a review on it and say what was good and bad about it.

I would take away PDHPE lessons because they are boring and I already know about things like road safety, the food pyramid and DR ABCD. I would also take away our English Skills book because we already have a Spelling and Grammar book where we do work in it that we do in the English Skills book. I would take away handwriting because it is a boring activity and we write everyday so we don’t really need to do handwriting.

I enjoyed Novel Study in Term 3 because the book Spilled Water was a good book and liked the activities to choose from on the grid. I also enjoyed the HSIE plays. I am playing the role of a bushranger and it is very fun.

I disliked Novel Study in term 4 because it wasn’t as fun as reading a novel like we did in the other terms and also because I found it hard to get all my work done in time.

I would’ve had more drama lessons, more library at least two lessons a week, more art at least three times a week and more French lessons at least two times a week.

I would’ve had less maths not every day but three times every school week. I would’ve also had less debating because it is boring and it is too hard for some students. I would’ve had less Spelling and Grammar because we have it every week and sometimes I can’t find time to finish all the activities.

  19.   Angie Says:

    Hey everyone!

Well before I began answering the questions, I would like to say such a GINORMOUS thank you to Mrs Miller and Mrs Thomas for making year5 the best school year of my life! I have enjoyed learning new things and having new experiences and I would just like to say thanks!

Hmmmm… If I was a year 5 teacher… Boy would I have fun! I don’t think I would change anything besides making the school year last for at least 2 more years!

What would you add and what would you take away?

I would add more after school/morning maths classes and also the jar that we began to talk about where you put a marble in a nice jar if someone is nice and put a marble in the mean jar if someone is mean.

What did you enjoy and what did you dislike?

I enjoyed every minute of year 5. I can’t really think of anything that I have disliked about year 5! I guess there’s nothing!

What should you have had more of and what less of?

I think I should of had more maths groups to help me improve on my maths and also some extra English classes to help me improve on my English.

Thanks again Mrs Miller and Mrs Thomas!

  20.   Millie. L. Says:

Hi Mrs Miller and mrs Thomas!
Here are my answers to your questions:
If you were the teacher what would you change?
I would make Novel Study/HSIE tasks ALL from the grids we have a variety of tasks to choose from. What would you add? I would add one extra night in Bathurst! So, we would be able to do more fun activities. What would you take away? Nothing. I love year 5 just how it is! What would you have had more of? Jonah-Man Jazz performances. We were so good and personally, I think we all should have gone on broadway! Although that would be a lot of work as flying to New York wouldn’t be that easy! What Less of? PDH, Sport is way funner and I think lots of people would agree with me here!

  21.   Lauren Says:

    Hi everyone:,
If you were the year 5 teacher what would you change? What would you add? What would you take away? Comment via the class blog or with your own blog post
There is not many things I would change in year 5 but there are a few little things I could do.

Here is what I would add or change: First of all I would add Saturday to the school week because we then can get a lot of work done and Saturday would be the finish of day where you could come to school and do anything you wanted that is work definitely. Secondly I would add another language to learn at school because it is great to learn different languages so when you travel around the world you can go to foreign countries and know how to speak the language. With our homework I would not have shaded tasks to complete instead you would have like 30 tasks you can do during a 3 week period but every week you still have to do spelling and maths because it compulsory to do because it is an important subject to learn. In the 30 tasks you can choose to do at least 3 different tasks a week and you can do more if you have time. The tasks would be matching the blooms taxonomy so there would be things for people who enjoy different things and like learning a different way E.G people who are auditory, kinaesthetic or visual, people who like art, drawing, nature, singing and other things like that. I would add blogging more often because blogging is great and you can leave great comments on other people’s blogs because blogging is really fun to do. I would also use laptops less and be writing more things because I like writing. That is all I really would change because life in year 5 is already really great!

    From Lauren C.

If I was the Year 5 teacher Mhhhh…………

I would use Edmodo as a social learning tool. In HSIE I would definitely do the unit of Gold or Antarctica. For novel study the really good readers would read the AWESOME Harry Potter series. For Maths I would also at the end of the year make a maths movie about what they have learned about in maths over the year. Lastly for the things that I wouldn’t change in Science we will study the subject of mould.

What major changes would I make……… Let me think none!!

For about every second day we would do skipping for 10 mins!!For novel study the really good readers would read the AWESOME Harry Potter series.

  23.   Lucy G Says:

What would I do as a teacher. Well, I would have a timetable like we already have and have all of the subjects we already have. But I might have added some more subjects such as more different languages like German and Italian. I would. Have maybe taken away some maths and replace it with other subjects. Another thing I would take away would be PDH and replace it with another art lesson. The reason why I would do this is because in the previous years, you would have learnt the basic things that you should do in an emergency and if we still learnt it in year 5, it would be like learning the same thing every year and we would be learning or revising the most boring things you could possibly imagine! I would also maybe add a few more drama lessons because drama is really entertaining and fun for children and it is also educational. It is educational by learning what and how things work by acting them out.

So that is what I would do if I were a year 5 teacher.

    From Lucy G

  24.   Sarah p Says:

The Best Thing about Year 5

The best thing about year 5 is the teachers, friends and most of all Year 5 blogging and camps.
The teachers are really fun and nice they always have something fun to do. They are also great encouragers which make them great people. Year 5 is the best year so far. The people who get Mrs Miller or Mrs Thomas as Year 5 teachers will be very lucky. Some people might think that homework is boring but no you’re wrong Year 5 homework is not boring even though you still have to do maths and spelling they add in extra activities like a book review. Year 5 also gives you a chance to blog which not every school has and the camps are also very fun.
I do not think that there is a thing that I would change or add or take away about Year 5 except starting blogging at the start at the year. Then we would be better!!

  25.   Josie Says:

Hi Mrs Miller and Mrs Thomas

    What would I change?

I would change the way that I don’t think that we use are computers enough so I would do most of our lessons on the computer!

    What would I take away?

I would take away how long reces and lunch is! so I could have more fun with my students!

    What would i add?

I would add Some things to bring in or do for Christmas!

    What did I enjoy?

I enjoyed meeting knew friends and basically starting a hole knew life!

    What did I dislike?

I disliked all the naplan tests and just other tests we had do do!

What should we have done more of?

Like i said we sould have done more computer work and blogging!

What should we have done less of?

We should have done less homework! He He He He!!

    From Josie

  26.   alex h Says:

    Hi.
I think that being a teacher would be fun but there are a few things that i would change.
I would get different computors because the small netbooks are really hard to use.
I might add some stuff like more excursions and more art and handwriting lessons.
I enjoyed camp and going to and bathurst but since I repeated year 5 I had to do the naplan test again.
I think that we should’ve done more handwriting and art but apart from that I think that we have done the other all of the other subjects evenly.
And thats everything I want to change, add and keep the same about this year. From Alex.

  27.   Sarah Says:

    Hi Mrs Miller
These rae quite diffiuclt questions because yea 5 was awesome and I loved everything! But here is my answers.

SO, if you were the teacher what would you change?
I would change the it to 2 nights at Bathurst and 3 days. Because we could of acted how it was on the gold fields and did a bit of roleplaying, like we did in year 2 when we went to Hyde Park Barracks.

What would you add and what would you take away?
Er, noting everything has te right balance!

What did you enjoy and what did you dislike?
I enjoyed Novel StudyArt, and HSIE the best. Including the task grids they were a whole lot of fun because everyone could choose what they wanted!

What should you have had more of and what less of?
Um, maybe a bit more drama becausethats the pnly subject we do once a fortnight! And we shouldn’t have less of anything because its all a great balance!

    Thank Youu :D

    Sarah (:

  28.   Annika Says:

Well the first thing I have to say, is that I would have to have strict rules, but all the rules would be fair to all the students at the school.

Some of the things that I would change is that we could wear earrings, I am not saying that they can wear long, dingily earring’s to school, but they can wear simple, cheap studs.

Another thing that I would change is that we could get an oval. If we get an oval we could use it for sport practice in the morning’s before school. We could also use it for hosting Saturday sports.

Something that I would add would be more healthy food at the canteen. Something that I would take away would some unhealthy food. By making those changes, it would give the kids more energy after morning tea time and lunch time.

This year I have really enjoyed it when we went to Golston Gorge, Bathurst and Manly. They were definitely one of favourite parts of year 5.

Something that I would make more or less would be nothing! I think everything is perfect and as it should be!

I have had an awesome year this year! This has definitely been the best year so far in primary school.

  29.   Liana Says:

Hey Mrs Thomas and Mrs Miller, here is what I do if I was the teacher….

If you were the teacher what would you change?
Well if I was the teacher I’d do a lot of fun things, but everything was so great that I’m not sure what to change! I really enjoy to work with partners or in groups so maybe we could work in groups more. I would have liked to learn more about the world and where places are and what cultures they have(if any) and things like that! But other than those, it is hard to say what to change!

    What would I add?
I would add learning more about animals because we haven’t learnt much about them (and I love animals!!). We could have chosen an animal and done a project on it. That could have been interesting. We could have done some project on Electriciy in Science so the information really stuck in our heads. So basically we could have done more projects and speeches to add to our learning.

    What would I take away?
I would take away our Global Connections unit because I didn’t really learn much or enjoy it! Our country wasn’t that interesting and there wasn’t much culture to investigate. Also the light bulb things were a bit hard to understand and remember (the names of the different parts of it), but the word wall definitely helped!! Everything else was very enjoyable and great to explore!

Thankyou for being great teachers and helping the whole of Year 5 get a better understanding of EVERYTHING done in year 5!

    From Liana

  30.   Sophie Says:

Hi Mrs Miller and Mrs Thomas,
If I was the teacher, I would change nothing much. I would probably add a few more homework activities to fit in our 2 weeks and take away some of our maths. We do quite a lot of maths, especially if we do extension and all the other levels in Let’s Solve It . I’d add a few more english activities and make more of the tasks compulsory. I enjoyed doing the wordle and tagxedo activities for spelling and creating posters for certain topics , based on what we have been learning about this term.
Overall, I love year 5 and can’t wait to go into year 6!!

  33.   mika Says:

I love novel study but during the fourth term I found it a little boring learning about bush ballads. so I thought of something I could change.
    hmmmm………………………..
I would probably learn about poems as well like the triantiwontigongolope by C.J Dennis and the traveller for a little bit of fun but I would probably instead of answer questions in my boring book I would act the whole ballad out and split my class ing groups that I choose because they may talk and they have to act the ballad out by themselves with no help by the teachers. I would do this because when they act the ballad out to you you can understand how much they understand about the ballad they are learning about.
I would make the art time a little longer and try some modeling sculptures, since art isn’t all about paintings. and mabye add some lessons to find out more about word since it is a essential need for publishing work.
overall It would be really hard to be a teacher and I couldn’t do it.
    could you?
