Why do we blog?

Filed Under (class blogging, parents, Year 5) by on 22-05-2010 and tagged , , , ,

We have been blogging in Year 5 now for about a term and a half and I think it’s time to ask a few questions?

  • Who reads our blog?
  • What do we share on our blog?
  • What are the benefits of blogging?
  • Are there concerns about privacy and the safety of our blog?
  • What do we learn from writing for a blog?
  • What do we learn from reading a blog?
  • Is blogging a useful skill or just a bit of fun?

and the big one WHY do we bother?

Mrs Miller and I would love to know what you think so please talk about it at home and see if you or your parents might leave a comment

    Hi!,
I would just like to say that having a class blog and a personal blog is really good! Its helps us learn hands on about internet safety. It is very enjoyable and i encourage every one to have one. It’s like running your own website! It take’s a lot of time and effort but you get to have fun and post about school and home and other exiting events!

Encouraging you all to try it!

Thanks so much Mitch, we really appreciate your feedback. As you can see so far I have comments from just two students. I have created a Wordle using your comment and my students to see which words occur most frequently and it is amazing – a really visual way to see why we should blog and I am going to use it to promote blogging at my school. I will post the wordle on the blog – I am still hoping for a few more comments from students. Stay tuned I’m sure you will be blown away by it as I was! Thanks again.

Hi 5RC, these are some really important questions you’re asking. As a teacher looking after my own class’s blog, ad thinking about starting some students writing individual blogs, these are questions I think a lot about too.
I think it’s great that we are able to share our work with people all over the world. It’s terrific to show off some of the great things happening in your classrooms. One of the biggest benefits of blogging is that we can share ideas – I know I have seen some great ideas on this and other blogs and used them to make my days with my class more interesting, and I hope others benefit from my class blog in the same way. Another benefit is that you can get great feedback on your work from people you would otherwise never know.
Privacy and safety are very important when blogging. We should be careful about what information we reveal on our blog, as anyone can read it, so we don’t want to share too much.
The more I get in to blogging with my class, the more I am convinced it is a useful skill. It helps us interact with people all over the world, gives us access to a wide range of opinions and ideas, and best of all, it makes us THINK!

Hello Mrs Thomas and Mrs Miller,
    My Answers are:
    1. Lots of people read our blog page, not just year 5.

    2. We share lot’s of things that we are doing in class or maybe on an excursion or camp.

    3. The benefits of blogging are that you get to comment, create posts and put maybe widgets or videos too.

    4. I don’t know of any concerns.

    5. I think we learn how to start writing good things that people are interested in and writing is lots of fun to me and that is one of the reasons I have a blog page too.

    6. From reading a blog I learn what people do from the other side of the world and from reading peoples blogs it makes us understand more about what other people do in their lives.

    7. I think both because you have fun creating widgets and then you have to concentrate on things like punctuation and writing things that make sense and writing things that people actually want to read.

    Bye,
    Kate
